Have a question about the Condor Squadron? Here's a list of the most commonly asked questions.
What is the Condor Squadron?
The Condor Squadron is a group of aviation enthusiasts dedicated to preserving the memory of those who have served our country over the years. One of our main activities is memorial flights in restored North American Aviation AT-6/SNJ trainers originally flown during World War II.
After the war ended the venerable old planes were often assigned to National Guard and other units for training purposes. In 1967 several members of the 146th Fighter Group formed the Condor Squadron as a search and rescue unit of the Civil Air Patrol.
We're working on a more detailed history of the Squadron and will add it to the site when it's completed.
What kind of planes do you fly?
As mentioned, we fly North American Aviation AT-6/SNJ trainers, two seat planes that were the Advanced Trainers of their time. Click here for more information on the planes.
How many planes do you own?
None of the planes are owned by the Squadron. Each is privately owned by individual members of the group. We currently have about a dozen planes in the "fleet".
Why are some of the planes in German markings?
The "good guys" need "bad guys" to shoot at when we conduct mock dog fights and air shows. It wouldn't look right for American planes to be shooting at other Americans, so some of the planes feature Luftwaffe markings.
Where can I see the Condors in action?
We perform at numerous events, primarily in the Southern California area, throughout the year. Click here for the current schedule.
Can I get a ride with you?
We are not set up to offer rides to the public. There are several companies that offer simulated air combat and rides in the T-6, and they can be found on the Internet. One of our members in Arizona does offer flight training and rides; click here for his web page.
Where are you located?
Our headquarters building is on the northwest side of Van Nuys Airport (VNY). Click here for a map and more information.
